Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
- (Genesis 1:3)
Words are powerful.
Sounds are how most animals on Earth communicate.
As humans, we’re the only creatures that write and we're so used to writing that we overlook how unnatural it is.
No other animal can do it.
Even stranger are the written languages we've created to instruct our computers.
We can create marvelous software and machines because of the precision that programming languages allow.
The tradeoff for this precision however is complexity.
PHP in the field:
The complexity of writing software means that the time to execution for ideas will depend on your ability to learn or hire people who know this language.
But all this is about to change.
With the rise of Artificial Intelligence, we'll be able to communicate directly with our computers even better than we do with other people.
The goal of natural language programming goes as far back as computing itself.
J.C.R. Licklider’s Dream
In the book, The Dream Machine, early computing pioneer, J.C.R. Licklider envisioned a world (back in the 1960s) where people could simply instruct a computer on what to do without writing code.
He even tracked how much time he spent in the office and observed:
…my "thinking" time was devoted mainly to activities that were essentially clerical or mechanical: searching, calculating, plotting, transforming, determining the logical or dynamic consequences of a set of assumptions or hypotheses, preparing the way for a decision or an insight.
Moreover, my choices of what to attempt and what not to attempt were determined to an embarrassingly great extent by considerations of clerical feasibility, not intellectual capability."
Licklider, back when very few people knew what a computer was, dubbed what he called “Man computer symbiosis” which would augment human intellect by freeing it from mundane tasks.
For decades it remained a dream.
Until now.
ChatGPT
Unless you've been hibernating in the Andes for the past year, you've probably heard about ChatGPT and the insane things it can do.
Like building a game from scratch:
Or making your own Chrome extension and saving your dog’s life.
It goes on and on.
Combine this with other AI tools that can generate images, videos, sounds…
And we're entering Licklider’s dream.
Already, there's now a distinction between the old and the new world.
Or what I call Smart apps vs Dumb apps.
Smart apps vs Dumb apps
Smart apps are AI-powered, natural language capable systems that can render thought to ideas seamlessly.
Dumb apps are the status quo…
Buttons and UIs and 50 late-night YouTube tutorials just to learn how to overlay that damn image on Photoshop.
The old world is finger clicking, mouse pulling, and laborious work.
The new world is expressing yourself to your computer and having it do all the mind-numbing work.
The intelligence singularity can be viewed as a point in time when more computing is done by machines than by human brains.
When every washing machine, television, and car is capable of logical reasoning.
At this point, there will be a radical shift on the planet.
Nothing has excited me quite like this since I learned about cryptocurrencies and perhaps the third season of Game Of Thrones.
AI and Crypto intersect nicely.
AI is centralized.
Crypto is decentralized.
With AI, dedicated teams and individuals will have more power at their disposal than ever before.
Just as software, allowed wealth creation to happen much faster and at scale because it was easily replicable.
Unlike say, a car factory, the founders of Instagram only had to make the app once.
And then sold it to Facebook for $1 Billion with only 13 people on the team.
I believe the wealth creation driven by AI will be even more dramatic than this.
It will shorten the gap between idea and creation. Reducing the requirement for creating truly marvelous things.
Bringing us closer to the power of gods.
Crypto on the flip side is all about community-owned resources.
Built right into its foundation of sharing data to different computers for enhanced security.
In Crypto, there's an emphasis that services should be in control of those who use and even secure it.
With AI, a single company can take over the world.
And with Crypto, we'll all own a slice of that company.
What to do next...
Consider subscribing if you haven’t…
Use smart apps, build smart apps...and get ready to surf the wave 🏄♂️
Until next time friend ✌️
P.S.
Read Dream Machine, if you're into computers and the internet. It’s a great book and more people should know about J.C.R. Licklider.
